Abuse of the Children

            There are many types of abuse for example there is sexual abuse, emotional/verbal abuse, physical abuse, and even child neglect is a form of abuse. Child abuse is physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child. Just the word abuse makes my skin crawl with anger, rage, and even sorrow for all the children that go through or have gone through any type of abuse. Since 1980, “sexual abuse increased by 350%, emotional/verbal abuse increased by 333%, physical abuse increased by 84%, and child neglect has increased by 320%” as of 2012. Abuse is very common in most households, anything from verbal to physical abuse.  

When children that started getting abused at a young age and it lasted through their developing ages they have a higher risk of staying in the “dark” and being “anti-social.” The government should provide free counseling or therapy for those kids who have a higher risk of causing a disturbance in the economy. Doing this would help lessen crime in the U.S, well in my opinion. A child who grew up in an abusive environment  have a higher risk of doing the same thing, which was what was done to them or what they grew up around. If a child grew up in a “dark” environment they’re more likely to live that way… in obscurity which includes having some activity in misconduct, verses a child who lived in a supportive home without any abusiveness. That child that did not grow up around any sort of abuse is at a higher risk of living a happy adult life without causing without crime.

            Child abuse is one of the most hated on topics besides maybe animal abuse or animal neglect. Sometimes people like to say one race is abused more than another. For example some folks say that “African-Americans” are abused more because of the fact that their ancestries were slaves, or that their race is abused more because of where they grew up, the hood for instance. In fact race has absolutely nothing to do with who gets abused or which race is the better race. The Dream Catchers for Abused Children stated that, “48% of abused children are boys and 52% of abused children are girls.” “45% of abused children are of the white race, 22% of abused children are of the African-American, and 22% of children are of the Hispanic race.” About three years ago my neighbor, which was a 5 year old girl had asked her step-dad for a drink and his response was no. The after effect made her cry… being a 5 year old if you did not get what you wanted at that age you cried then got over it. Instead he said no then beat her until she peed in her pants. We often found bruises on her or hand prints; therefore, she was very frightened of males. Thus, the government should provide free counseling or therapy for any child that has been through any form of abuse.

Dear Editor and Chief:

My name is Emily Tevanian. I am a sophomore at Early College High School in Conway South Carolina.

I am writing to address child abuse, and how the government should provide counseling for more severe cases.

One case that would need to provide counseling was when a 5 year old boy that has autism, tired telling his teacher something, but while trying to tell her he was spitting due to lack of being able to talk. That teacher than put soap in his mouth then hit him on the chest, to try to teach him how not to spit. Another case was when a 13 year old boy who also has autism, was choked on the bus, by the bus drive’s assistant because he peed his pants. After this altercation both men still had their jobs. I feel that both cases were cruel and wrong, also that they are going to need counseling that the government should provide.
